Harry Styles Debuts Unreleased Song at MSG to Honor Liam Payne on Second Death Anniversary
Harry Styles is remembering his late friend and former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on the second anniversary of his death.
During his Friday night show at Madison Square Garden in New York as part of his Together, Together residency, the Grammy winner performed an unreleased acoustic song titled “What Is Enough,” which he said he wrote about two years ago.
“I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,” Styles said, per footage shared by concertgoers. “There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with, that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. Two years ago today, I lost one of those friends … I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other.”
Payne died on Oct. 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. He was 31.
Styles then introduced the unreleased song, dedicating it to his late friend.
“There are so many people who have touched my life in such special ways that I wouldn’t be here without,” the Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally singer continued. “I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”
The song’s lyrics appear to reflect on loss and remembrance. In part, they read: “Among the stars above, the friend in all those satellites. … I’m not wise enough, but I wrote you a letter just to burn it up, and watch it rise like you’re in the sky.”
Styles also seemingly referenced Payne’s funeral in another lyric: “I could tell you what it’s like to bury friends on a Wednesday night, gathered in the garden ’round a fire.”
Styles’ 30-night Madison Square Garden residency ends Oct. 31. Read The Hollywood Reporter’s recap of the residency’s opening night here.
