Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’ brother reacts to ‘jealous boyfriend’ claim

Translate

The brother of Cameron Waldeck-Cooks has reacted to a report that suggested that her boyfriend, Ethan Coetzee, was “jealous”, “possesive”, and “controlling”.

The St Stithians teens died earlier this month in what authorities believe to be a murder suicide. Their bodies were found by a family member in a self-catering lodge in Mpumalanga.

Cameron allegedly died from strangulation/suffocation, while it has been reported that Ethan took his own life.

CAMERON WALDECK-COOKS BROTHER REACTS TO ‘JEALOUS’ BOYFRIEND REPORT

On his TikTok account, Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’s brother, also named Ethan, has reposted a video from true-crime content creator and anti-GBV activist Bella Monsoon.

In the video, Bella shared details from a recent media report that portrayed Ethan, a 2025 matriculant who played in the first-team rugby, as a “jealous” and “controlling” boyfriend who had access to Cameron’s social media accounts and phone.

The report claimed that Ethan had reportedly become “enraged” at his girlfriend, who had befriended male learners at school. He also allegedly withdrew from studying at Stellenbosch University, as he did not want to be away from her.

Bella likened Ethan’s behaviour to “coercive control”, which was common in cases of intimate-partner violence.

She said: “Jealously presented as love, possessiveness framed as protection, monitoring disguised as concern and constant access justified with ‘If you have nothing to hide, then why does it matter?’

Bella added: “Controlling behaviour and excessive jealousy are recognised in research on intimate partner violence as behaviours that deserve to be taken seriously. A 17-year-old girl’s life has been stolen. And her family are not the only family grieving”

Cameron’s brother also reposted a screenshot of an Instagram post in which he accused Ethan of “murdering” his sibling.

@bella_monsoon New allegations have emerged in the Cameron Waldeck-Cooks case, raising an important conversation. The investigation is ongoing and the new details remain reported allegations, not proven fact. But the wider conversation matters. 📰 News24 | Rapport 📆 16 August 2026 #BellaMonsoon #CameronWaldeckCooks #CoerciveControl #SouthAfricanCrime #SouthAfricanNews ♬ original sound – Bella Monsoon | True Crime SA

‘KIND, GENTLE AND LOYAL’

The report about Ethan Coetzee’s alleged behaviour towards his girlfriend, Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, counters a statement from his family, in which he was described as “kind, gentle and loyal”.

The Coetzees disputed that Ethan was involved in the alleged murder of his girlfriend, stating that there was “no sign of an altercation”. They also claimed that Ethan “sustained no injuries consistent with a struggle” and had reported that the couple appeared happy the night before their deaths.

A former school educator has also described Ethan as an “amazing young man”.
