Music composer Anirudh Ravichander is one of the most in-demand music directors in the South Indian film industry at the moment. The songs and background music he produced have gained popularity among the youth generation, and many actors and filmmakers are keen to have him in their films.
Nevertheless, the famous composer and filmmaker Gangai Amaran has a different opinion on the present trend of music.
Gangai Amaran questions Anirudh's songs, says today's music lacks lasting value
In a recent interview with Maalaimalar, Gangai Amaran spoke about the changes in Tamil film music and compared the current generation of composers with legends such as Ilaiyaraaja and AR Rahman. He questioned whether today's music has produced songs that will remain popular for several years. Speaking about Anirudh, he said, "Leaving Ilaiyaraaja and AR Rahman aside, name one song by today's young music directors that will remain popular for a long time.
Can you name even one such song composed by Anirudh?" He also expressed concern that music in Tamil cinema was no longer the same as it used to be and said people were not ready to accept this change.
Gangai Amaran says Anirudh's music lacks Tamil identity despite creating a new style
Gangai Amaran further explained that he recognizes Anirudh's ability to create a different style of music. However, he feels the composer has not given enough importance to Tamil in his songs. "They compose songs without even knowing the language.
Where do they show the identity of Tamil? He has definitely created a new style, and his music is good. But the truth is that he has not given importance to Tamil," he said. His comments have once again brought attention to the debate about the use of Tamil lyrics and language in modern film songs.
However, while Anirudh has a massive fan following, some quarters of the audience have also criticized his songs for their tunes and lyrics.
Anirudh's upcoming films include Rajinikanth's 'Dharman' and 'KHXRK'
On the flip side, Anirudh still remains one of the busiest composers in the film industry. After the success of 'Jailer 2', he has quite a few big projects waiting for him. Some of them include the new film 'Dharman' starring Rajinikanth and directed by Ashwath Marimuthu and 'KHXRK', an upcoming film featuring Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. On the personal front, Anirudh is reportedly set to marry Kavya Maran, daughter of Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran, in Greece on November 11, followed by a reception in Chennai. Despite his growing popularity and busy schedule, Gangai Amaran's remarks have added a fresh debate about the direction of Tamil film music.
