Princess Diana’s legendary “revenge dress” is going up for sale for the first time in nearly 30 years, heading to auction at Sotheby’s in New York this December.

Diana actually owned the dress for three years before ever wearing it, considering it too daring at the time.

That changed on 29 June 1994.

It was the same evening Prince Charles publicly admitted, in a nationally broadcast interview, to having been unfaithful during their marriage.

Diana had originally planned to wear a Valentino gown to a Vanity Fair dinner at London’s Serpentine Gallery that night.

After Valentino prematurely released details of her outfit to the press, though, a frustrated Diana pulled the unworn Stambolian dress from her closet instead.

She paired it with a pearl and sapphire choker, a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch, and Manolo Blahnik heels. Together, it created one of the most recognisable fashion moments in modern royal history.

Fashion scholar Justine Picardie has called it “the most powerful thing Diana ever wore.”

She credits the appearance with cementing “revenge dressing” into the fashion lexicon as shorthand for post-breakup confidence.

The black silk gown, designed by Christina Stambolian, is expected to sell for between $150,000 (R2,406,000) and $300,000 (R4,812,000) when it goes under the hammer on 9 December.

where the proceeds are going

The dress was previously sold in June 1997, when Diana auctioned 79 of her dresses to raise money for breast cancer and AIDS charities, before eventually going on display at Paisley Museum in Scotland.

This time, part of the proceeds will go to NHS Lothian Charity, on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

Before the December sale, the gown will tour publicly, opening at Sotheby’s London from 18-24 September, before travelling on to Hong Kong and Geneva.

There’s something genuinely striking about a single outfit still carrying this much emotional and cultural weight, three decades later.

Diana was almost controversial in her own quiet way, and I’ve always been a big fan.

This moment was so typically her, using fashion to say exactly what words couldn’t.

I love what she wore, and I love how she processed her emotions through it. Honestly, if I had the funds, I’d be at that auction myself.

This dress was and still is, absolutely iconic.
