Warning: Spoilers for Godzilla Minus Zero

In one key way, Godzilla Minus Zero drew a fine line between the newest iteration of Godzilla and all the previous incarnations of the iconic kaiju. Every version of Godzilla is unique in some form, and the same is the case for the monster that appears in Godzilla Minus One and its newly released sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero. However, one of the most notable differences didn't become apparent until the time came for his big fight with King Ghidorah.

Ahead of the battle, many interesting conclusions had already been drawn about Godzilla, most of which were established in Godzilla Minus One. Fragments of Godzilla's genetic material can infect human beings, his atomic breath ability functions like an atomic bomb, and his dorsal fins protrude from his tail when he's preparing to shoot off a blast. Plus, his regenerative capabilities were taken to a whole new level in terms of how fast he could recover from injuries.

Godzilla's self-healing abilities have technically been a part of the character for decades, ever since they were established in 1989's Godzilla vs. Biollante. But it wasn't until Godzilla Minus Zero that they became the crux of his fighting style.

Godzilla's Healing Factor Is Now Crucial To Winning His Monster Fights

During the heated showdown with Ghidorah in Godzilla Minus One's ending, Godzilla's arm was caught in the jaws of one of Ghidorah's heads. Godzilla cut off the head with his tail, but the severed head continued to hang on. Rather than waste precious time trying to force it off, Godzilla simply yanked off his own arm. It was a brutally painful move, but his rapid regeneration rate allowed his arm to reconstitute itself within moments.

Godzilla's willingness to inflict harm on his own body underscores a difference in battle tactics for this particular take on Godzilla. In previous monster battles in Godzilla's movies, such actions wouldn't have made much sense, because even though regeneration has long been a tool in his arsenal, it's traditionally not helpful to him while a fight is still ongoing. Both the Heisei and Millennium versions of Godzilla didn't heal fast enough for that to be plausible.

For Godzilla, his healing factor's main utility was that it would allow his wounds to recover in time for the next battle. But in Toho's new series of Godzilla movies, his regeneration capabilities have become an asset with a tremendous amount of strategic value in combat. He can now risk his own limbs, with no fear of permanent injury or even being crippled for longer than a few seconds, for that matter.

This ability is a game-changer in terms of how various monster matchups the franchise could arrange in the future. Gigan's gruesome strategy of slicing Godzilla with his hook-like blades, for instance, is one of many tactics that may be rendered ineffective against this interpretation of Godzilla.

Godzilla's Tail Is More Dangerous Than Ever

Interestingly, Godzilla's tail found a new use in Godzilla Minus Zero as well. While watching Godzilla remove one of King Ghidorah's heads is a familiar sight to be sure for longtime fans of the kaiju, Godzilla decapitating an enemy with the sharp dorsal fins on his tail is most certainly a franchise first. Godzilla has been using his tail as a weapon for decades, but its primary use has been for bludgeoning or blindsiding opponents, or as a way to strike an enemy when his hands aren't free.

Now, Godzilla has demonstrated the ability to chop off monster limbs by using his tail like an axe. Many monsters in his rogues' gallery, from Mechagodzilla to Gigan, possess weapons for cutting, whereas Godzilla had nothing at his disposal that came close. Godzilla Minus Zero has changed the calculus on that, giving any future villains an additional reason to approach Godzilla with caution.
