Spy x Family Just Revealed Anya's Amazing New Powers & Nobody Is Talking About It

In the summer of 2026, it's not just Spider-Man's big screen power-up that's exciting in the world of pop culture, with Tatsuya Endo bringing some thrilling developments out of the Shonen Jump brand. Spy x Family may not have the same mass appeal as the year's biggest blockbuster, but its central telepath was at least somewhat likely at some point to develop her powers into something more. In the most recent two-parter of chapter 139, Anya Forger did just that in a bid to zero in on Donovan Desmond, who happens to be visiting Prime Minister Chapman at the same hospital where Loid is recovering.
As teased in chapter 139 part 1, Anya suddenly found a chance to help track down the "Final Boss" Donovan Desmond, with hopes to finally break through and hear his thoughts. Anya then pushes her telepathy to the limit, her "horn" hair ornaments crackling with energy, a nosebleed forming, with part 2 proving her efforts had real merit, as she was able to seek out the "vibe" or emotional energy matching the one Damian has been thinking about. Not only does it allow her to remotely tap into Donovan's mind, but it seems she can even vaguely perceive a visual of the elusive National Unity Party chairman in what appears to be a new manifestation of her powers in Spy x Family, clairsentience.
The sheer development of Anya being able to focus her telepathy and channel it into such a feat is an unprecedented achievement in Spy x Family. Given Anya's past as a test subject from Project Apple, it's clear that these abilities were at least to some extent intended as a sort of emotional SIGINT ability to locate targets and hear their thoughts despite not even being in the same room, seeing them, or knowing what their voice sounds like. Clairsentience, a term given to one of the hypothetical psychic senses to perceive based on emotional or physical energy, appears in this chapter alongside a fuzzy manifestation of an immature clairvoyance.
Anya uses this despite it clearly straining her body, sticking around until Yor, whom she amusingly calls "the other Final Boss", scoops her up so the child isn't late for school, before seeing her nosebleed and quickly circling back to the hospital. It's a chapter loaded with revelations, such as Donovan's apparent lack of ability to read minds, and Anya's hilarious non sequitur to Damian at school about being sad that aliens don't exist, calling back to previous suspicions about Donovan. But even with such a solid chapter, the final panels have some crucially telling moments, with Anya having what appear to be resurfacing memories of her time with Project Apple.
Spy x Family's New Chapter Ends With Sad Reminders Of Anya's Past Life
Despite Anya realizing that Donovan is seemingly a regular human after all, she can't help but hear Damian's concerned thoughts about his father, and Donovan's own confusion as to why his dying predecessor wanted to meet with him. But this encounter may have come with the risk of digging up some horrific old memories, as Anya is seen clutching her Chimera plush, with some clearly dark thoughts plaguing her mind and preventing her from sleeping soundly. In an entirely wholesome moment afterward, Anya closes the chapter by seeking Yor's comfort sleeping in bed with her adoptive mother, but still, some key words linger from the penultimate page.
Die...scared...Des...d's......research..."
These are among the first words Anya hears using her powers in the latest Spy x Family chapter. Despite multiple life-or-death scenarios encompassing virtually all the main Spy x Family cast, this may either dig up repressed memories about Project Apple, what ultimately happened to her mother, or finally, a heavily implicit connection with Donovan and Prime Minister Chapman.
These words are directly tied to the last thoughts Anya was able to sense out of the mind of Chapman, about "the research" beyond something about "don't know...to......nia..." For now, there's little to confirm, beyond a moonshot possibility of Anya's mother being named "Tonia", although the French translation seems to indicate the last word is merely "Ostania". It's potentially also the first verbal confirmation of Donovan's illicit activities as well as Chapman's dying thoughts, in all likelihood coming back to Project Apple.
