Indonesia boosts education to end male contraceptive misconceptions

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Population and Family Development is strengthening public education on male contraception to counter persistent myths and misconceptions and encourage greater male participation in family planning.

The ministry's Deputy for Family Planning and Reproductive Health, Wahidin, said the National Webinar on Male Family Planning was part of efforts to educate the public.

"With greater public understanding of various aspects of male contraception, we hope that men's acceptance of and participation in family planning programs will continue to rise," he said here Thursday.

Wahidin said education on male contraception should cover available options and recent innovations, giving the public clearer and more accurate information about reproductive health.

One myth previously addressed by the ministry is that a vasectomy is equivalent to castration, a procedure that disables the function of the testes.

The ministry explained that a vasectomy blocks the sperm ducts without removing or severing male genitalia, while the testes continue producing testosterone.

Wahidin said education efforts should target not only fathers and husbands, but also male family planning motivators, support groups, field workers, medical staff and program managers.

These groups should serve as credible sources of information on reproductive health and male contraception, he said.

He expressed hope that better public understanding of male contraception would lead to sustained acceptance and participation in family planning programs among men.

The ministry's campaign comes amid a gender disparity in contraceptive use in Indonesia, with women accounting for the overwhelming majority of modern contraceptive users.

The 2025 Family Data Update shows that men account for about 3.3 percent of modern contraceptive users, while women account for more than 96 percent.
