Bank Indonesia hails September trade surplus as buffer for economy

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) views the continued trade balance surplus in September 2026 as a key driver for further strengthening the external resilience of the national economy.

According to data released by Statistics Indonesia on Monday, the trade balance for September 2026 recorded a surplus of US$3.36 billion, following a surplus of US$3.55 billion in August 2026.

This latest figure brings Indonesia's cumulative trade surplus for the January–September 2026 period to US$10.61 billion.

Executive Director of BI's Communication Department Ramdan Denny Prakoso said in a statement that the central bank remains committed to deepening policy synergy with the government and relevant authorities to safeguard external resilience and sustain long-term economic growth.

The September 2026 surplus was primarily driven by a sustained non-oil and gas trade surplus alongside a narrowing oil and gas deficit.

The non-oil and gas trade balance posted a surplus of US$5.67 billion, supported by an increase in exports to US$26.64 billion from US$25.62 billion the previous month.

This performance was anchored by natural resource-based products—such as animal and vegetable fats and oils, precious metals and jewelry, as well as manufactured goods like iron, steel, and electrical machinery.

China, the United States, and India remained the top destinations for these exports.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s oil and gas trade deficit narrowed to US$2.32 billion in September, down from US$2.54 billion the previous month.

Statistics Indonesia data showed that the contraction in the deficit was achieved as the decline in oil and gas imports outpaced the drop in exports, providing an additional cushion to the overall trade balance.
