The Legend of Zelda's return to the top of the proverbial tree as part of its 40th anniversary as a series has really been a lovely thing to see. It remains one of Nintendo's greatest creations, and though there have obviously been some ups and downs over the years, it deserves to be celebrated in the way it currently is.
Though new releases like the Ocarina of Time Remake understandably grab all the headlines when they come along, a big part of the recent joy around the franchise has been returning to the older games in the series more generally. Much of that has been made possible by the dedicated work of fans all over the world, who make the oldest games in the series available in more convenient, and often updated, fashion.
Now, the latest of those efforts has been made available, and it all centers on one of the best games in the series to date.
Anybody who has been following Square Enix closely in recent years will likely have come across their efforts to bring out HD-2D remakes of some of the earliest games in their roster, from series like Dragon Quest. This essentially retains the magical pixilated essence of the originals, while also updating the art considerably to take advantage of the definition offered by modern displays.
It's that strategy that Zelda fans have now adopted to bring back The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the third game in the beloved series. As first reported by XDA, there's a new fan-made HD-2D remake of the game on the way, and though it's very early in development, it really does look spectacular.
The developer shared a snippet of gameplay over on Reddit, and there was plenty of positive feedback from a famously discerning community. "This looks insane. I’ve gotta imagine it’s an insane amount of work for just one person," one comment read.
While another added, "Bro I can’t keep up with these amazing projects. I was just about to start playing the dual screen mod and now this??"
"Your feature list is wild. You’re not just redoing the graphics; you’re fundamentally reworking the mechanics of the game. This project sounds amazing. I will be following this," a third said.
The project is still in its very early stages, so don't expect to be playing it any time soon. That said, if it continues as is, it could be one of the most exciting Legend of Zelda projects for a long time to come yet. Plus, we have plenty on the way to be playing in the meantime, particularly if Ocarina is as good as everyone is hoping.
