No cover-up for NDC wrongdoers; Mahama will protect no one – Fifi Kwetey

NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey says President John Mahama will shield no one who engages in wrongdoing, including members of the governing party.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, he warned that party membership would offer no protection from accountability.

“And I can tell you, the president is not going to cover anyone. We are not going to set up any scheme to try to cover nobody.”

Mr Kwetey said the strongest test of the NDC’s commitment to accountability would be its willingness to punish its own members.

“So, as far as I'm concerned, the real, the real punishment is not the punishment meted out to an NPP person. The real punishment is the one meted out to somebody in the NDC.”

His comments come amid scrutiny over the World Cup visa scandal and sexual abuse allegations involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School.

President Mahama suspended National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah on October 1 over alleged World Cup visa racketeering. Police investigations followed, alongside a presidential committee inquiry. Mr Ankrah has denied wrongdoing.

In the Obuasi case, the NDC initially directed headmaster Zakaria Abdulai to withdraw from its Juaben chairmanship race. It briefly cleared him to contest before directing him to step aside on October 20 to allow an unhindered police investigation.

The party stressed that the decision did not establish guilt.

Mr Kwetey argued that the NDC must hold itself to a higher standard. He linked that responsibility to the executions associated with the party’s political origins.

“So you can't be in NDC and expect that you do the same thing NPP does and expect the party to cover you. No, there's no cover-up.”

He also cautioned members against treating electoral victory as proof that the party was exceptional. He said voters had rejected the NPP’s conduct, and repeating it would threaten the NDC’s future.

For him, the decisive issue was how the government responded when wrongdoing emerged.

“But the way you deal with them is what matters.”

He insisted that the party was prepared to discipline its members and make examples of those who failed to uphold the required standards.

“If you are not capable of doing what is right. Other people would take that position and do it.”
