Toy bricks for team-building mistaken for bomb in Sri Petaling

The toy bricks found in a box initially suspected of containing a bomb outside a shoplot in Sri Petaling two days ago were part of equipment used for training and team-building activities, police said.

Brickfields police chief Hoo Chang Hook said the director of a company that organises such activities informed them the plastic box belonged to his company.

“The box and the items inside it were game equipment belonging to his company and used for team-building activities. There is no link to any criminal activity,” Hoo said in a statement today.

He said further checks on the company’s activities revealed that they offered a game called “Radioactive Bomb”, intended to encourage teamwork and improve the participants’ mental agility.

The company also provided the police with a module of the game, in PDF format, for reference.

Hoo said the box, containing 20 plastic toy bricks, was left behind by one of the company’s employees after a team-building programme held in Ipoh, Perak, on Sept 11 and 12.

After the programme ended, the employee took the game equipment back but accidentally left it outside the shoplot while travelling home.

He said the employee was believed to have left the box behind due to fatigue after the team-building programme.

A bomb disposal unit was deployed on Monday after the suspicious plastic box, which initially recorded high radiation levels, was found in front of the shoplot.

The unit disposed of the box, which later was discovered to include several smaller boxes that contained what appeared to be Lego blocks.

Further checks by the atomic energy department confirmed that there were no radioactive readings at the scene.

The case was investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
