Casualty's Elinor Lawless breaks down key Stevie and Dylan anniversary moment

Casualty’s Elinor Lawless has spoken out about a key moment at the end of the show’s recent 40th anniversary episodes, involving her character Stevie Nash and fellow doctor Dylan Keogh.

Stevie and Dylan have been at odds this year over Stevie’s secret fling with Dylan’s son Matty, but everything changed when during the special episodes last month, Stevie and clinical lead Flynn plunged into deep water in an ambulance.

Distraught Dylan eventually stepped up to save Stevie’s life in the ED, and the pair later shared a poignant moment as they got their relationship back on track – a moment that was cut short when Flynn entered the room.

Speaking to Digital Spy about this emotional scene, Elinor said: "I like where myself and Will [Beck, who plays Dylan] worked to leave that moment between Stevie and Dylan. I love the fact that there's always a question mark there, and I love the fact that you get this really contained moment that's interrupted.

"They never get to quite say what they need to say or want to say to each other. And I don’t even think they quite know what that would be anyway. So I think there's a real beauty in that.

"That's something that wasn't planned – it’s just something that you find. When you're working with an actor who you really, really respect and an actor who really, really knows how to play, it's a surprise. What we found in that scene was a total surprise, and I love that."

The Holby consultants shared a surprisingly poignant moment in the show’s Christmas episode back in 2024, where Dylan gave Stevie a paperclip for a Secret Santa gift that allowed her to fix the broken zip on her bag.

It’s a scene that has resonated with viewers, and Elinor paid tribute to that episode’s director Steve Hughes – who was also at the helm for this recent anniversary double-bill.

"It was the same when we filmed that paperclip scene," she reflected. "We didn't know going into that. Nobody said it's going to be this, or they're going to do this, we just played it as we did, and we found something in it. Steve Hughes as a director is brilliant because he allows story to grow out of unexpected moments.

"That paperclip scene, that was a Steve episode, and this moment that these two have at the end that’s interrupted, that's a Steve episode. And he's really, really good at pointing the lens where you don't expect him to point it."
