Sipho Mbule reveals why he turned down Kaizer Chiefs

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Sipho Mbule has revealed that he turned down an opportunity to join Kaizer Chiefs after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mbule was out of contract with Sundowns last year and eventually made the move to their rivals Orlando Pirates.

The midfielder spent just one season with the Buccaneers, making 23 appearances across all competitions before leaving the club and joining Iraqi side Zakho SC.

Speaking on the Giants documentary, Mbule explained why he chose Pirates despite interest from several clubs, including Chiefs.

“Firstly, my contract with Sundowns ended. There were other teams that also wanted to sign me. Even Chiefs approached me,” Mbule said.

“The people and coaches that I spoke to, like coach Rulani, told me that the best team to join is Pirates because I think there was an opportunity for him to make a comeback [to the team].”

Mbule quickly became a fan favourite at Pirates, but his time at the club was ultimately cut short and his contract was not renewed.

His struggles at club level also affected his international career, with the midfielder losing his place in the Bafana Bafana setup and subsequently missing out on the FIFA World Cup.

Mbule was loved by Pirates fans

The “Master Chef” has since revived his career in Iraq, where he appears to have rediscovered his best form.

His resurgence at Zakho SC will come as a welcome boost for a player who was once regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in South African football.

Do you think Master Chef would have been a good fit for Chiefs?
