WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE MANGA CHAPTER #1194As One Piece's Elbaph arc gets closer to its epic conclusion, Zoro's powerful and (mostly) immortal foe is not only forcing the Straw Hat swordsmen to get serious for the first time in years, but also making him evolve. Throughout most of One Piece's arcs, Zoro is put in a situation where he must confront the enemy's strongest fighters while Luffy deals with the group's leader. Only a few of those fights have pushed Zoro to go all out, and the Elbaph arc has now joined that list.

Elbaph continues to find ways to raise its tension with continuous surprises and battles worthy of the homeland of giant warriors. While Luffy, Loki, and the Left-Arm of the Pirate King, Scopper Gaban, attempt to make progress against the secret King of the World, both Sanji and Zoro are in battles that are forcing them to get closer to Luffy's levels of strength. And chapter #1194 of One Piece featured considerable progress towards that end with Zoro.

The Holy Knights of God have proven to be some of the most overpowering foes that One Piece has presented, and that was before they were supercharged by their mysterious leader, Saint Nerona Imu. Their rapidly regenerating bodies and horrific Devil Fruit abilities have helped keep the World Government in control of the world for hundreds of years. God Knight Saint Sommers faces Zoro and has pushed the swordsmen to put on his headband for the first time since Wano.

Zoro's Headband Signifies A Fight Worthy Of His Full Power

Wano was an arc that somehow met and arguably exceeded the hype that it had built up for years by delivering some of the most satisfying and visually stunning battles the series had seen up till that point. Zoro had his work cut out for him with two separate opponents that required every ounce of strength he possessed. He took his battles with some of One Piece's major villains, Pirate Emperor Kaido and his strongest officer, King, seriously enough to warrant the honor of donning his headband, while the Egghead arc did no such thing.

Unlike Luffy and Chopper, Zoro does not power up by utilizing different transformations, but in the past, when he fought an opponent that he feels deserves his full focus, he puts on and tightens his headband. The incredible feats of strength he's displayed with the headband on make it seem like it gives him a massive power-up, but it's more of a symbol that Zoro's no longer holding back. Now, God Knight Sommers' regenerative powers and rare weakness have made him the first opponent since King of the Beast Pirates to require such levels of Zoro's focus.

The Straw Hat's Swordsmen Has Been A Conqueror All Along

Zoro has accidentally used Conqueror’s Haki several times throughout the series, arguably since the Alabasta arc in his battle against Daz Bonez (aka Mr. 1). It took till his battle with Kaido to finally realize he was capable of using the extremely powerful Haki, but until Elbaph, he’d not been put into a situation where he needed to master it. After Zoro figured out that God Knight Sommers has a metal heart that keeps him alive and can only be damaged by Conqueror’s Haki, it gave him a clear reason to finally grasp the power normally reserved for the world’s most formidable leaders.

In Chapters #1193 and #1194, Zoro is seen practicing his control of the most powerful form of Haki against God Knight Sommer’s, in quite a comedic fashion by consistently dicing up the (nearly) immortal foe, but failing to manifest his Conqueror’s Haki at will to land more lasting damage. But after some practice and much dismemberment from a regenerator that’d put X-Men’s Wolverine to shame, Zoro seemingly learned to use the special power at will. And judging by Zoro’s decision to put on his iconic headband, One Piece readers are about to see the swordsman do something extremely epic.
