Motorists lament obstruction, accident trap on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

ENUGU — Motorists plying the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway have raised the alarm over an abandoned heavy-duty truck obstructing the highway at 9th Mile Corner, describing the situation as a death trap for road users.

The truck, which reportedly broke down about five days ago, has allegedly remained on the expressway, causing traffic congestion and contributing to multiple accidents in the area.

The incident occurred near the site of the international motor parts market being constructed by the Enugu State Government.

A motorist, Mr Uchenna Eze, who spoke to Vanguard on Wednesday evening, said the abandoned truck had contributed to several accidents, leaving some road users injured.

He also said the obstruction had caused serious gridlock along the busy highway.

Eze appealed to the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and the Enugu State Government to urgently remove the truck and restore the free flow of traffic.

“This is a very bad situation. The place where the truck broke down is very dangerous and it has been causing accidents.

“Today, being Wednesday, there was a multiple accident and a lot of people were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment,” he said.

According to him, the continued presence of the truck was particularly concerning because an FRSC checkpoint was located close to the area.

“The FRSC mounts a road checkpoint close to here, and I don’t know why they have not enforced the removal of the truck from the expressway to allow free flow of traffic.

“They should urgently remove the truck to save the lives of travellers using this road,” Eze said.

Efforts to obtain the reaction of the FRSC as of the time of filing this report were unsuccessful.
