Asian Games 2026: Manush-Diya go down in semifinal, settle for bronze medal

India’s Manush Shah and Diya Chitale etched their names into the history books by becoming only the second Indian mixed doubles pair to win a table tennis medal at the Asian Games, on Friday.
World No. 8 Manush and Diya stunned World No. 4 Doo Hoi Kem and Wong Chun Ting of Hong Kong, China, 3-1 (11-6, 13-15, 11-9, 11-5) in the quarterfinals to assure themselves of at least a bronze medal.
Their run, however, came to an end in the semifinals against China’s World No. 2 pair Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha. The two-time defending champions won 4-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-8, 11-2), leaving the Indian duo with bronze.
Before Manush and Diya, Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra were the only Indian mixed doubles pair to win an Asian Games table tennis medal, taking bronze in 2018.

Overall, Indian paddlers had previously won three Asian Games bronze medals in table tennis - in the men’s team event in 2018, mixed doubles through Sharath and Manika in 2018, and women’s doubles through Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee in 2023.
Earlier in the competition, Manush and Diya received a first-round bye before registering comfortable 3-0 wins over Sri Lanka’s Bimandee Swarna and Chanul Kulappuwawadu, and the Maldives pair of Moosa Ahmed and Aishath Nazim.
Meanwhile, the other Indian mixed doubles pair of Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade bowed out in the quarterfinals after losing 0-3 (5-11, 10-12, 9-11) to China’s Lin Shidong and Kuai Man.
