From music to MoMo: ShattaFest puts cashless trading in the spotlight

Translate

MoMoFest x ShattaFest 2026 has brought digital payments to the heart of entertainment, giving festivalgoers and traders at the Accra Sports Stadium a chance to combine music, shopping, and mobile money transactions.

The initiative, backed by MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL), placed the MoMo App at the centre of the festival’s marketplace, where patrons could pay for food, clothing and other products using their phones.

For MMFL, the event provided an opportunity to promote digital payments in a setting where consumers were already spending and interacting with businesses.

The company also used the festival to educate patrons and vendors on fraud prevention, sharing tips on protecting accounts, identifying scams and adopting safer digital financial habits.

Building on the 2025 partnership

The event builds on the partnership established at ShattaFest 2025 at Independence Square, bringing together Shatta Wale, his management team and MMFL to promote digital finance and entrepreneurship.

According to MMFL Chief Executive Officer Shaibu Haruna, the collaboration draws on entertainment's influence to encourage young people to explore business opportunities and support small-business development.

The partnership offers a way to reach audiences who may not engage with conventional financial education campaigns, while demonstrating how mobile money can support everyday trading.

MMFL says the 2026 edition has also opened up prospects for extending the MoMoFest x ShattaFest model to other markets in the region.

Bringing digital payments into the festival experience

For participating vendors, the festival offered access to potential customers alongside an opportunity to accept mobile payments.

Cashless transactions can reduce the need to handle large amounts of physical cash and provide records that help traders track payments and sales.

For customers, the event made mobile money part of a familiar activity: buying a meal, an item of clothing or another product.

That practical experience is important because wider adoption depends on more than access to payment technology. Consumers also need convenient opportunities to use it.

What small businesses stand to gain

For small businesses and informal traders, digital payments can support more organised record-keeping and reduce some of the difficulties associated with collecting cash in busy environments.

Transaction records may help vendors monitor earnings and manage cash flow, while offering customers an alternative when they are not carrying cash.

However, these benefits depend on network reliability, transaction charges, access to suitable devices and customers’ willingness to pay digitally.

Large events offer an opportunity to test how these payment options work under real trading conditions and identify the challenges vendors and customers face.

Entertainment as a route to financial inclusion

Festivals bring audiences, businesses and service providers together, creating opportunities to introduce digital financial services through everyday purchases.

For occasional users, paying for goods at an event may help build familiarity with mobile money. Traders can also gain experience in accepting payments and checking transaction records.

The longer-term impact, however, will depend on whether patrons and merchants continue using those services after the festival.

Reliable systems, clear charges, fraud prevention and effective consumer protection remain essential to building that confidence.

Beyond the concert

The MoMoFest x ShattaFest partnership illustrates how entertainment and financial technology can work together to introduce digital payments to wider audiences.

Its contribution to Ghana’s cashless economy will ultimately depend on whether the festival experience translates into lasting changes in how people pay and trade.

For MMFL, the opportunity is to turn the convenience demonstrated at the stadium into a habit that extends to shops, markets and small businesses beyond the event.
