Ghosts Season 6's Official Cast Change Threatens To Expose Sam's Villainy

Ghosts has spent five seasons establishing Sam Arondekar as the most important person at Woodstone Mansion, but season 6 threatens to change that dynamic. Her ability to communicate with the dead has made her indispensable to the mansion's supernatural residents and her husband, Jay. However, it has also afforded her considerable control over their relationships, something she hasn't always handled responsibly.
Although Sam generally has good intentions, she has a history of withholding information, manipulating conversations, and prioritizing her own personal interests. Her behavior has become a recurring source of comedy for the CBS sitcom, but it also demonstrates how easily she can exploit her position as Woodstone's primary connection between the living and dead.
Ben Feldman's promotion to series regular as Kyle threatens to expose these shortcomings. Since Kyle shares Sam's supernatural abilities, he introduces a level of accountability that Woodstone has never really experienced. Sam is no longer the only person who can communicate with the ghosts, potentially challenging an arrangement that has allowed her to operate without much oversight.
The two-part Ghosts season 6 Halloween special, "Halloween 6: The Mirror," offers a glimpse of this changing dynamic. With Sam in Australia filming Polar Opposites, Kyle helps manage Woodstone's supernatural residents while she's away. However, the implications of his expanded involvement extend far beyond providing temporary assistance.
Kyle's Involvement Means Sam's Lies About The Ghosts Can't Continue In Season 6
Sam's role as Woodstone's primary supernatural intermediary has frequently created opportunities for dishonesty. Since Jay cannot independently verify what the ghosts are saying, his wife has considerable freedom to determine which conversations she shares. Although this arrangement generally works, Sam has demonstrated that she isn't above exploiting it when circumstances become inconvenient.
One of the earliest examples occurs in season 1's "D&D," when Sam agrees to help Jay play Dungeons & Dragons with the ghosts. However, she grows frustrated with the game and lies to Jay instead of admitting she doesn't want to continue. Trevor eventually exposes her dishonesty by writing directly to Jay on a mirror.
This storyline establishes that Sam's dishonesty isn't always motivated by protecting the ghosts or preserving someone's feelings. Sometimes, she simply doesn't want to deal with a situation and takes advantage of Jay's inability to verify her claims.
Season 4's "Halloween 4: The Witch" provides another example of Sam's questionable judgment. When Patience organizes a witch trial against her, Sam initially dismisses it as harmless ghost nonsense without telling Jay. After learning what's been happening, Jay asks why his wife never told him, recognizing the potential danger more readily than she does.
These incidents highlight a recurring weakness in Sam's approach to communicating with the ghosts. She tends to treat herself as the final authority over which supernatural developments deserve attention, even when her decisions affect other people.
Kyle's expanded role threatens that arrangement because Sam can no longer assume her version of events will be the only one available. His presence creates another witness to the ghosts' conversations, potentially exposing inconsistencies between what actually happens and what Sam chooses to share.
The Halloween special establishes that Kyle can manage Woodstone's supernatural complications without Sam supervising his every decision. While the episode doesn't expose any new lies from Sam, it demonstrates that her ability to control information is no longer guaranteed.
How Kyle's Ghosts Cast Addition Changes The Dynamic In Woodstone
Beyond threatening Sam's dishonesty, Kyle's Ghosts arrival challenges the authority she has gradually accumulated throughout the show. For years, she has occupied a uniquely important position at Woodstone, with both the living and dead depending on her involvement. Having someone else share that responsibility could prove much harder for Sam than she anticipates.
The Halloween special establishes that Kyle can function as Woodstone's supernatural intermediary during a particularly chaotic period. Between Hetty's reunion with her estranged sister Margaret and the uncertainty surrounding Pete's disappearance, the mansion faces several complications that ordinarily would have demanded Sam's attention.
Yet the household continues functioning without her physically present. Kyle's involvement demonstrates that Woodstone's residents have another option, potentially undermining Sam's assumption that she must remain central to every supernatural development. This could become particularly interesting when Sam returns from Australia. Although Kyle isn't deliberately competing with her, his ability to form independent relationships with the ghosts could introduce an unexpected source of jealousy.
Sam has invested considerable time and energy into helping Woodstone's residents, often sacrificing her personal and professional interests to accommodate their demands. Discovering that the ghosts have become comfortable relying on someone else might leave her questioning whether those sacrifices were necessary.
The ghosts could also discover advantages to having multiple people available to assist them. Sam has become increasingly comfortable pushing back against their requests, particularly when they interfere with her own priorities. If Kyle approaches those interactions differently, the ghosts might begin favoring him in certain situations. Of course, Kyle isn't guaranteed to be a more responsible intermediary. His own relationships and personal motivations could eventually complicate his judgment, just as they have for Sam. Nevertheless, his presence introduces a degree of choice that Woodstone has previously lacked.
The most compelling consequence of Kyle's addition is that Sam might finally have to confront the limitations of her own behavior. She can no longer assume that being the first person capable of seeing the ghosts automatically makes her the best one to handle every situation.
Question 1 of 3
Ghosts doesn't need to transform Sam into an actual villain to explore these flaws. Instead, Kyle's arrival creates an opportunity for meaningful character development by challenging the authority she has taken for granted. Whether Sam embraces that change or resents it could become one of season 6's most entertaining conflicts.
