Indonesia urges stronger regional cooperation on human rights

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between United Nations (UN) human rights mechanisms and regional organizations to improve the effectiveness of human rights promotion and protection globally.

Mugiyanto made the statement during Indonesia's intervention on General Debate Item 5: Human Rights Bodies and Mechanisms, at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Thursday, Sept. 24.

In a statement on Friday, Mugiyanto said international human rights mechanisms cannot work alone amid UN financial constraints.

Cooperation with regional organizations is needed so that international mechanisms connect more closely to conditions and needs at regional and national levels, he explained.

He said strengthening this cooperation supports more sustainable human rights promotion by considering the diverse contexts of each country and region.

In the regional context, Indonesia promotes cooperation through the ASEAN Human Rights Dialogue (AHRD), a forum for ASEAN member states to share developments, experiences, and challenges, including through civil society engagement.

"Indonesia stresses the need to strengthen cooperation with regional organizations so that the international human rights system can provide real benefits for the public," Mugiyanto said.

He also emphasized the principle of national ownership in human rights promotion, saying this approach ensures policies and mechanisms remain relevant to the characteristics and needs of each country and region.

The AHRD represents one of Indonesia's key contributions to regional human rights cooperation, with Mugiyanto consistently attending its sessions at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta since taking office.

The 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council addressed agenda items related to UN human rights bodies and mechanisms, including the Complaint Procedure, an interactive dialogue with the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), and reports from the UN Secretary-General and the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee.
