Transfer report update: Sundowns sign Thabo Cele

According to FARPost, Sundowns have moved swiftly after Cele’s departure from Kaizer Chiefs, with the midfielder putting pen to paper after talks progressed rapidly.

Cele has completed his medical, with Kabo Yellow expected to officially announce the deal soon.

THABO CELE’S EUROPEAN JOURNEY

The move comes after the 29-year-old mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Kaizer Chiefs.

Born on 15 January 1997 in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, Cele‘s football journey began at the KZN Academy, before he moved straight to Europe in 2016.

He joined Portuguese third-tier side Real SC, where his performances attracted the attention of S.L. Benfica.

The Portuguese giants signed him in 2017. He developed with Benfica B before returning to Real SC on loan for regular game time.

In 2018, Cele joined Cova da Piedade in Portugal’s second division, making more than 100 professional appearances during his time in the country.

His European journey continued in 2021 when he joined Polish top-flight side Radomiak Radom.

In August 2023, he moved to Russia to join Fakel Voronezh, where he spent almost 18 months before mutually parting ways with the club in January 2025.

Cele has also represented South Africa at U20 and U23 level, including at the Tokyo Olympics, before earning senior caps for Bafana Bafana.

In January 2025, Cele returned home, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract with Kaizer Chiefs. During his 18 months at Naturena, he made 36 appearances across domestic competitions.

He also helped Kaizer Chiefs win the Nedbank Cup, beating arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in the final.

However, the arrival of head coach Fernando Da Cruz changed his situation. Cele was deemed surplus to requirements and had been training away from the first team.

Now, the midfielder has found his next destination. Sundowns have secured his signature, adding another experienced player to their squad.

For Cele, the journey continues.
