What happens if I pay money into the wrong bank account?

Translate

Sending money to the wrong account number is one of the most stressful things to happen and unfortunately, getting the money back isn’t always guaranteed. Here’s all you need to know if this happens.

CAN YOU AUTOMATICALLY REVERSE?

Most electronic transfers use the account number as identification and not necessarily the account holder’s name. So if you type the correct name but an incorrect digit in the account number, the bank’s system will still process the payment based on the number, not the name.

Once the funds land in someone else’s account, the bank generally can’t just pull the money back without that person’s consent. This is because it isn’t legally the bank’s money to move.

So, what can you do?

  1. Contact your bank as soon as possible. The sooner you report it, the better the chance the funds haven’t been withdrawn or spent yet.
  2. Provide the transaction details. Reference number, date, amount, and the account details you used.
  3. Ask the bank to contact the receiving bank. Your bank can request that the receiving bank freeze or flag the funds and reach out to the account holder for permission to reverse the transaction.
  4. Get everything in writing. Keep records of every call, email, and reference number in case you need to escalate.

What determines whether you get your money back

  • The recipient’s cooperation. If they agree to return the funds, the process is usually quick.
  • Whether the funds are still there. If the account has already been drawn down, recovery becomes much harder.
  • Bank policies and turnaround time. Some banks move faster than others in flagging and investigating these cases.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE RECIEVER REFUSES TO RETURN THE FUNDS?

This is where it can get legally complicated. In South Africa, courts have generally held that money paid by mistake is not lawfully the recipient’s to keep. There are legal ways to recover it. However, pursuing this route can involve time, legal fees, and no absolute guarantee of success. So, this is a last resort after the bank-led process has been exhausted.

How to avoid it next time

  • Double-check account numbers before confirming, especially on mobile apps where digits are easy to mistype.
  • Use the “pay small amount first” trick for large or first-time transfers where possible.
  • Save verified account details as a saved beneficiary/payee going forward.
