Indonesia adopts zero-tolerance approach to year-end transport safety

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation has stressed a zero-tolerance approach to factors that could compromise public safety during the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year holiday travel period.
"We have carried out preparations for Christmas and New Year holiday season, with the goal of ensuring safe, smooth, and comfortable travel. Our target remains the same as in previous years, maintaining zero tolerance when it comes to safety," the Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana said in Jakarta on Sunday.
Suntana added the ministry has been working with relevant stakeholders to conduct ramp checks, urge transportation operators to deploy only vehicles that meet safety standards, and encourage travelers to monitor their health during the year-end holiday period.
Moreover, the ministry plans to offer free homecoming trips from Jakarta to Central Java and East Java. Several state-owned enterprises are expected to roll out similar schemes.
"As in previous years, the ministry will organize free homecoming trip programs during the Christmas and Eid al-Fitr holiday season," he said.

Suntana encouraged the public to take advantage of the programs, noting that registration would be available online.
He further said the government had allocated Rp883 billion (around US$48.7 million) to fund public transportation incentives for the upcoming Christmas and New Year holiday period, covering rail, maritime, ferry, and air transport services.
Regarding the air transportation, he emphasized the incentive scheme would apply not only to state-owned carriers such as Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, and Pelita Air.
"It will also apply to private airlines," Suntana noted.
Earlier, Deputy Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Drajad Hari Wibowo said the government would fully cover the value-added tax on economy-class airline tickets for domestic flights operating between December 22, 2026 and January 10, 2027.
The incentives also include a 30-percent discount on economy-class train and sea transport tickets, as well as waivers of port service fees for pedestrian passengers and Class II and Class IVA vehicles at 14 ferry ports.
