Dungeon Crawler Carl has taken the world by complete surprise with its irreverent humor, ridiculous premise, and loveable and truly unique characters. Matt Dinniman's LitRPG series began in 2020 with the story of Carl and his ex-girlfriend's prize-winning cat, Princess Donut, attempting to survive an alien-controlled dungeon that doubles as the galaxy's most sadistic reality show.
What started as a cult hit has since exploded into a phenomenon, with more than eight million copies sold across all formats and multiple installments becoming bestsellers in print and audio. The franchise has expanded just as quickly, spawning a WEBTOON and graphic novel, while a live-action Peacock series from Universal and Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door is currently in development.
Now, fans are preparing to enter the dungeon themselves with Renegade Game Studios' upcoming Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG and the standalone card-crafting game Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable. And if you're a fan of the franchise and plan to partake in the RPG shenanigans, there's a brand-new official adaptation on the way in 2027 (via BackerKit).
Renegade Game Studios is giving Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobook fans even more to look forward to alongside its upcoming tabletop releases, with narrator Jeff Hays and Soundbooth Theater producing several new audio experiences for campaign backers. Most notably, Hays is recording a complete audio reading of the 350-plus-page Dungeon Crawler Carl Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook.
Designed as both an entertaining listen and another way for players to learn and prepare for the game, the fully voiced rulebook is currently expected in summer 2027. Unlike some of the campaign rewards, it is planned to be available for purchase through Soundbooth Theater following its release.
Hays is also narrating "Archie," a 54-page original short story written by Ben Wolf and included with the Crawler Chaos expansion for Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable. The written story will appear in retail versions of the expansion, but Hays' audio performance is exclusive to crowdfunding campaign backers and is expected in fall 2026.
Soundbooth Theater is additionally creating an official Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG soundboard featuring effects and character audio for use during tabletop sessions, currently targeting summer 2027.
The Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG is a new skill-based TTRPG that lets players create their own Crawlers and attempt to survive a customized World Dungeon, while Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable is a solo and cooperative card-crafting deck-building game built around the same brutal game-show setting. Both are launching simultaneously via Backerkit, and the crowdfunding campaign has already raised more than $13 million from over 55,000 backers, with physical fulfillment currently estimated for fall 2026.
