John Constantine Movie From ‘Evil Dead Wrath’s Francis Galluppi In Development At DC

Translate

EXCLUSIVE: With Clayface still shapeshifting his way through theaters — to over $90M worldwide, so far — DC Studios has set Francis Galluppi to pen a John Constantine movie for the studio, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for DC declined to comment. We understand the project is in very early development. This comes ahead of the release of Evil Dead Wrath, the seventh installment in the iconic horror franchise, which marks Galluppi’s entrée into studio filmmaking.

Nicknamed Hellblazer, John Constantine debutee in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 in 1985. The character, created by writer Alan Moore and artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben, is a working-class British detective with expertise in magic and the occult and a penchant for the grift.

Keanu Reeves famously played a version of the character in Francis Lawrence’s Los Angeles-set 2005 Warner Bros. film Constantine; a sequel has been awaited for some time. Matt Ryan played Constantine on television, leading an NBC series of the same name that aired for just one season, beginning in 2014.

Galluppi is an American filmmaker whose Evil Dead film is based on an original story that he developed and brought to franchise creator Sam Raimi and team in 2024, as we first reported. The filmmaker caught heat off of his debut feature, the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma Count, which released through Well Go USA Entertainment after premiering to critical acclaim at at Fantastic Fest.

In a statement to Deadline years ago on the then-untitled Evil Dead sequel, Raimi promised, “Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”

Warner Bros. releases Evil Dead Wrath on April 7. Galluppi is repped by UTA and Anonymous Content.
