Everything has been said about galamsey; it’s time for real action – Awula Serwah

The Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, says everything that needs to be said about illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has already been said, and what Ghana needs now is decisive action to end the menace.

She said she was struggling to identify what more could be said to inspire political leaders to act urgently against the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

Ms Serwah said that repeated calls and concerns about the menace had not yet produced the necessary action to address it.

She stressed that the country must move beyond discussions and lamentations to concrete measures that demonstrate a genuine commitment to ending illegal mining.

"I just don't know what else to say; everything that needed to be said has been said already; all we need to do is take the necessary action," she said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, October 29, during a discussion on the effects of galamsey on the country.

Ms Serwah has also called for stronger public mobilisation, arguing that Ghanaians must organise peaceful activities to put pressure on the leaders to take decisive action against the menace.
