J.J. McCarthy gave the New York Giants a late chance to steal a win against the New Orleans Saints, but head coach John Harbaugh offered little clarity about what came next. His decision to bench Jameis Winston and turn to McCarthy nearly paid off, leaving the Giants with a quarterback choice ahead of their Week 7 trip to Houston. When reporters asked Harbaugh about his plans, he said the team was working through the decision. That response drew criticism, with questions coming over whether the coach didn't want to spill the beans.
Why John Harbaugh's QB secrecy is being questioned
Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post criticised Harbaugh's decision to keep the quarterback decision secret, calling it pointless. The coach discussed the matter on Monday, a day after New York's 34-27 defeat against New Orleans, but he did not announce who would start the game against Houston.
“We're working through that now,” Harbaugh told reporters before adding that the team was “Honing in on a decision.”
Harbaugh had previously explained that the decision would depend on which player gave the Giants the best chance to win.
“There's zero chance that Harbaugh, as he spoke to reporters over Zoom on Monday, didn't know whether he plans to start Winston or McCarthy in Houston,” Cannizzaro wrote.
The uncertainty also came as McCarthy made a strong case for himself during the Saints game, putting pressure on the coaching staff to settle the position.
J.J. McCarthy's performance gives Giants a new offensive option
McCarthy entered against New Orleans with just under 12 minutes remaining and recorded 243 yards and a touchdown. He led three scoring drives and helped the Giants with 17 unanswered points before their comeback fell short in the final seconds.
Winston, meanwhile, finished with 152 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He had won all three of his previous starts for New York this season, giving Harbaugh a reason to look at his earlier results against McCarthy's late impact.
McCarthy offered something the Giants had missed. The team had struggled to run the ball, managing just 34 yards on 14 carries against the Saints. His mobility could allow Harbaugh to bring back quarterback read plays and moving-pocket concepts that the offense had used less often with Winston.
Houston presented another challenge, with the Texans ranking third in the NFL with 18 sacks. The Giants also faced uncertainty at offensive tackle, with Andrew Thomas dealing with a groin injury and Jermaine Eluemunor recovering from a calf injury.
