December is coming, and with it, the usual scramble to book a holiday before prices climb out of reach.

But going local this festive season doesn’t have to mean an expensive one, a few smart choices now can make all the difference.

Why timing is everything

December is South Africa’s most expensive travel month, full stop.

Accommodation prices in Cape Town alone can run 50% cheaper during shoulder months like May, August, or November compared to the December-January peak.

If your dates have even a little flexibility, booking just outside the school holiday window can save you a genuinely significant amount.

Where “local is lekker” actually saves you money

Not every destination hikes its prices the same way. 

Durban remains one of the best value-for-money cities in the country, with warm water, a friendly beachfront, and plenty of free entertainment: the beach, the promenade, and the weather all cost nothing.

For something further off the beaten track, the Wild Coast offers rugged, untouched coastline at a fraction of Cape Town or Durban prices, with backpacker lodges often renting out private family rooms with sea views for a fraction of hotel rates.

The self-catering trick that works well on the Wild Coast

Eating out three meals a day will wreck any holiday budget fast.

On the Wild Coast specifically, look for accommodation with a braai stand and a kitchenette.

Pack a cooler box with meat, boerewors, milk, and bread from home. It’s a genuine way to cut food costs without sacrificing a proper festive-season braai.

Booking smart for domestic flights

Budget airlines serve most major and even smaller airports affordably, and it’s worth booking domestic routes with some lead time where possible.

Even last-minute flights on busier routes don’t always spike in price the way international fares do, so it’s worth checking again closer to your travel date if your plans shift.

I find it quite reassuring knowing a proper festive season doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag, hey. Especially in this economy.
