Kylian Mbappé produced a moment of individual brilliance and scored from the penalty spot as Real Madrid cruised to a 4-1 victory over Sevilla in La Liga on Sunday, stepping up in the absence of suspended Vinícius Júnior.

Mbappé doubled Madrid’s lead in the 37th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium with a superb solo effort. Controlling the ball while turning his body, the France forward used a quick touch to evade a defender before rounding Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and finding the net.

He completed his brace in the 63rd minute, converting a penalty to strengthen Madrid’s grip on the contest.Arda Guler had opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a shot into the top corner.

Yan Diomande added Madrid’s fourth in the 82nd minute, while Manu Bueno scored for Sevilla, who sit sixth in the standings.Guler’s opener came shortly after a VAR review of an incident involving Sevilla’s Peque. The review did not result in a red card for the Madrid midfielder over an apparent elbowing incident. The win was particularly important for Madrid, who were without Vinícius, serving the first of a four-match suspension following an incident in which he pulled an opponent’s hair and aggressively confronted the referee.Madrid moved to third place, one point behind Atletico Madrid and six behind leaders Barcelona, who defeated Real Betis 5-2 on Saturday.
