Lena Dunham is a mum! Girls star welcomes first child with husband Luis Felber

Lena Dunham has announced that she's now the proud, loving parent to her first child. The Girls mastermind and her husband Luis Felber have expanded their family via a surrogate, who she said "radiated such safety".

Although the writer and actor publicly revealed that she underwent a hysterectomy in 2018, she had kept her route to motherhood relatively private. Now though, she's opened up about her journey in an op-ed for Vogue.

In the piece, she revealed that her first words to her daughter were: "Hello... I’m your mama. You… you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come."

She also explained how she had expected to feel "jealousy" towards her surrogate, but instead felt it towards her baby. "For the chance to be tucked into someone who radiated such safety", she explained.

Back in July 2025, Dunham had alluded to how she and Felber were looking to become parents, telling The Times they were "in the process of expanding our family in new ways".

Of her hysterectomy, which was done to combat the pain of endometriosis, she said: "It was a grief but it was also a relief. I thought I would have the opportunity to experience my fertility and my cycle waning and it never was."

She added: "Instead it was a very quick, sharp cut-off."

On top of this wonderful personal news, Dunham has also had an extremely busy professional life over recent years. Her second memoir, Famesick, became a New York Times best-seller in spring.

She also has a new movie, Good Sex, en route on Netflix. The film also stars Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo and romantic comedy legend Meg Ryan, with multi-hyphenate Dunham as director, writer and producer.

Also on Netflix, Dunham's London-set series Too Much was released in 2025, starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe alongside a supporting cast including Richard E Grant, Rhea Perlman, Andrew Rannells and Naomi Watts. Dunham herself also starred as the sister of Stalter's character.
