Lagos begins pre-festive cleaning across Ikoyi corridors

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has announced the commencement of a pre-festive cleaning operation in Ikoyi, as part of efforts to enhance environmental sanitation and prepare key parts of Lagos for increased activities during the festive season.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said that the exercise was part of the authority’s wider efforts to intensify environmental sanitation operations across strategic locations in the State ahead of the festive period.

The Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, Mukaila Sanusi, disclosed this in a recent statement obtained by The PUNCH.

Gbadegesin explained that the operation commenced with comprehensive cleaning of drainage channels along the Bourdillon, Alexander and Gerrard corridors in Ikoyi, involving the removal of accumulated silt, waste and other obstructions from the channels.

According to him, materials evacuated from the drainage channels were being removed immediately to prevent wash-back and the creation of fresh environmental concerns.

Gbadegesin said that the exercise “would aid the free flow of water and improve the overall environmental condition of the area for residents, businesses and road users.”

He disclosed that the cleaning operation would continue across other streets in Ikoyi before extending to Victoria Island and other parts of Lagos, as part of LAWMA’s wider pre-festive sanitation programme.

The LAWMA boss urged residents, businesses and other stakeholders to keep drainage channels free of waste, properly package their waste and hand it over to accredited private sector participation operators for appropriate disposal.

He also appealed to residents and businesses to cooperate with LAWMA personnel by providing unhindered access to areas requiring cleaning and avoiding activities that could obstruct sanitation operations.

Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustaining strategic environmental sanitation operations across the State, while urging residents and visitors to play their part in achieving a cleaner, healthier and more liveable Lagos.
