Gillian Anderson's New R-Rated Horror Movie Officially Releases On Digital This Week

Gillian Anderson's new R-rated horror movie, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is gearing up for its digital release.

Anderson is best known for starring in The X-Files as Dana Scully, but she has since taken on roles in an array of projects across genres, including Netflix's Sex Education and the cult-classic horror series Hannibal. Though she remains active in the TV space, Anderson returned to movies with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, an acclaimed horror film that hit theaters on August 7.

Following its run in theaters, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is now set to debut on digital, with a listing on Amazon revealing that the movie will become available to rent and purchase in the U.S. at 3 a.m. on Friday, September 18. The Mubi-distributed film will be available on all major digital retailers, including Apple TV and Fandango at Home.

Directed by Jane Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow), Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma tells the story of a director making a slasher sequel who becomes obsessed with casting the original film's final girl, tangling the two women into a web of psychological and sexual chaos. Also starring Hannah Einbinder, Jack Haven, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Aren Buchholz, and Kevin McDonald, the movie crosses genres, mixing horror with dark comedy and romance.

The film's upcoming digital release follows rave reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma has a glowing 94% critics' score, with praise aimed at the film's mix of horror thrills and a genuinely meaningful exploration of personal discovery.

Alex Harrison's Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma review for ScreenRant was similarly glowing at nine out of 10. For Harrison, the film, which is rated R for bloody violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language, plays as a celebration of horror, and one that cements Schoenbrun as an intriguing new voice in the horror genre. The film fared generally well with audiences, sporting a 79% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, but it didn't make major waves at the box office. Made on an estimated budget of $10 million, the movie grossed about $8.3 million worldwide.

It remains to be seen how Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma fares on digital, but the strong response and fun mashup of genres and styles suggests it has the potential to become a major cult classic. With a digital release set for Friday, there evidently isn't long to wait before the film reaches a wider audience, further establishing Anderson as a powerful screen presence.
