Ghost in the Cell will be haunting video on demand soon.
The Indonesian horror comedy, which was written and directed by Joko Anwar (2020's Impetigore), follows inmates in a high-security prison facing off against a murderous supernatural entity. The movie debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival and received glowing reviews, including one from RogerEbert.com's Brian Tallerico, who described it as "The Shawshank Redemption meets Hellraiser." It has so far earned a perfect 100% score from 28 critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also performed well with audiences on the Popcornmeter, earning 84% from more than 50 users.
The official listing for Ghost in the Cell on Apple TV reveals that the movie will be made available on digital on October 27, 2026. It is currently available for pre-order for $14.99. While the only audio included in the listing is the original Indonesian track, the movie will be available subtitled in both U.S. English and Canadian French. This digital debut precedes the movie's physical media release on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on November 17.
This digital release date could be perfect for multiple reasons. First of all, it means that the 2026 horror movie will be available just four days before Halloween, which is a holiday when many viewers, both hardcore and casual fans alike, seek out new horror movies to watch. Ghost in the Cell also has an edge because it is a relatively quiet weekend for theatrical horror movies. The only major new release hitting theaters that weekend is the Christmas-themed horror-comedy Christmas at the Kringles, which is so far not a standout on early box office tracking.
While there will be a number of holdover horror titles in theaters that weekend, including Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (which debuted on September 18), Rob Savage's Other Mommy (which debuted on October 9), the spider thriller Crawlers (out October 16), and the R-rated DC Studios body horror movie Clayface (out October 23), everything but the supervillain movie will have already been available for more than two weeks, diminishing their potential to bring out audiences in droves.
2026's Resident Evil recently became the highest-grossing installment in the long-running franchise.
In addition to the fact that it will be new for at-home audiences, Ghost in the Cell has an advantage with its perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, which means that it edges out Resident Evil (which is Certified Fresh at 96%) as the best-reviewed of the bunch. In fact, its Tomatometer score is more than six times higher than the dismal 16% earned by Other Mommy. While the other aforementioned horror movies do not yet have official scores, a 100% score is rare enough that it is unlikely that any of them will be able to compete.

While it remains to be seen how Ghost in the Cell performs on video on demand, it seems like a promising way to close out the Halloween season, which has so far been marked by commercial success. In addition to Resident Evil's box office record, this includes Other Mommy earning the best domestic opening weekend for a 2026 Blumhouse movie, even beating out the debut of the all-time hit Obsession.
