Two crew members were injured after a fire broke out aboard a tanker vessel at a port in Calaca City, Batangas on Wednesday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Thursday.

In a statement, the Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog said the fire broke out in the engine room of Motor Tanker (MTKR) GINDARA at the Balayan Distillery Inc. Port in Barangay Talisay.

“Twenty crew members were accounted for and reported safe, while two sustained injuries and were referred to medical facilities for appropriate treatment,” it said.

“One injured crew member was admitted to Metro Lemery Medical Center for further treatment and monitoring, while the other, who sustained an inhalational injury, was treated at Metro Calaca Hospital and later opted to be discharged against medical advice,” it added.

The vessel was also carrying molasses.

Responders proceeded to the port, conducted firefighting and response operations, provided medical aid, and conducted an initial investigation.

The PCG also deployed BRP Malapascua (MRRV-4403), a 44-meter multi-role response vessel, to augment firefighting and response operations.

As of the latest report, no visible fire was observed at the bridge and superstructure of the tanker but smoke remained visible.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. —VAL, GMA News
