How much will Mamelodi Sundowns get for reaching next round of Intercontinental Cup?

Mamelodi Sundowns have booked their place in the next round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup after edging Al Ahli 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

A brace from Nuno Santos secured a memorable victory for Miguel Cardoso’s side and ensured Sundowns progressed to the next stage of the prestigious tournament.

Santos opened the scoring with a well-taken free-kick, but Sundowns struggled to maintain control of the contest after taking the lead. Al Ahli grew into the game and were eventually rewarded when Ronwen Williams turned the ball into his own net to level the scores.

Masandawana responded strongly in the second half, taking greater control of proceedings and putting the Saudi Arabian side under increasing pressure.

Their persistence was finally rewarded late in the second half when Santos rose highest to head home his second goal of the afternoon and restore Sundowns’ lead.

The victory also comes with a significant financial reward for the African champions.

How much will Sundowns earn in the Intercontinental Cup?

Mamelodi Sundowns will reportedly earn US$2 million (approximately R32 million) for reaching the next round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

That figure could increase substantially should they go all the way to the final, with the prize money reportedly doubling to US$4 million.

Sundowns qualified for the competition after winning the CAF Champions League last season under Cardoso, earning the opportunity to compete against continental champions from around the world.

The Brazilians will now have around two months before their next Intercontinental Cup fixture, giving Cardoso and his squad time to focus on their other targets.

They will turn their attention back to the CAF Champions League and Betway Premiership, while also preparing for their upcoming MTN8 final.

Sundowns’ next Intercontinental Cup opponent will be determined by the result between Mexican side Toluca and the eventual CONMEBOL representative.
