Asian Para Games 2026: Indian Para Swimmer Deported Over Sexual Misconduct Charges

The Indian contingent at the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya has been rocked by scandal after para swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh was deported following charges of sexual misconduct. Shaikh, a former world No. 1 in the men's 100m butterfly (S5) and 50m breaststroke (SB4), was briefly detained and questioned by Japanese police alongside Indian delegation officials. The incident occurred at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, where the squad is staying, after a female housekeeping staff member of Nepali origin reported that Shaikh attempted to inappropriately touch and grope her. She managed to escape the room and immediately alerted her manager, leading to local police intervention and his prompt removal from the Games before he could compete.

This marks a second embarrassing disciplinary setback for the Indian delegation in Nagoya, following a prior incident where an official employed by the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was also sent home on charges of misconduct. That incident took place during the Asian Games a few weeks ago.

Moving quickly to address the fallout, representatives from the Indian squad issued an apology to the hotel management, while the Asian Para Games Organising Committee considers its own sanctions, including a potential lifetime ban.

Speaking to NDTV, Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) officials confirmed that they intend to hand Shaikh an immediate lifetime ban after affording him a formal hearing upon his arrival in India.

"Will announce a life ban for Shaikh after hearing him upon his landing in India," a PCI official said.

NDTV has also been told that the hotel and the organisers sought updates on the action India would take against Shaikh. Depending upon the nature of the punishment the para-swimmer receives, the authorities in Japan and the hotel will decide on the further course of action.

The federation reiterated that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance towards such disgraceful conduct on the international stage. Back home, the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has already briefed the government on the situation.

Statement By Paralympic Committee Of India

Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) The Paralympic Committee of India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of sexual misconduct or behaviour that violates the dignity, safety and rights of others. The Committee has established strict disciplinary guidelines and expects every member of the Indian contingent to uphold the highest standards of conduct, discipline and sportsmanship. Ahead of the Asian Para Games, webinars were conducted to sensitise athletes and members of the contingent about their expected behaviour, responsibilities and the importance of maintaining discipline and adhering to the prescribed code of conduct.

In the present matter, the Chef de Mission (CDM) has recommended the strictest disciplinary action, including a lifetime ban against the athlete concerned. The athlete has been sent back to India from Japan. Further action will be taken by the competent authorities in accordance with the applicable rules and procedures after the conclusion of the Asian Para Games.

The Paralympic Committee of India reiterates that participation in international sporting events carries a responsibility to uphold the values of respect, integrity and accountability. Any alleged misconduct will be dealt with seriously, in accordance with the established disciplinary framework and principles of due process. At this stage, the primary focus of the Indian contingent remains on supporting our athletes in delivering their best performances and continuing to win medals for the country.

The Committee remains committed to ensuring that India's representation at the Games reflects not only sporting excellence but also discipline, dignity and responsible conduct.
