The coin came down tails for the seventh time on India's tour of New Zealand. Given only the visitors get to call, India stuck with their tails call to win their sixth toss out of seven games, for the second ODI of this five-match series. Only in the last T20I, earlier on this tour, had India experimented with calling heads. They went on to lose that toss as well as the match.

With rain shortening the match to a 47-over contest here in Wellington, and overcast skies offering no guarantee that further overs will not be lost as the day proceeds, Shubman Gill had no hesitation in sticking New Zealand in to bat first. Mitchell Santner wryly observed: "Looks like a good day to bowl first."

Just as the teams were sure with what they wanted the toss, the teams were also certain with their team selection for this game. None of them made any change to the XIs that lined up in Auckland, where India secured a 1-0 lead. This means Auqib Nabi will playing in the India XI, ahead of Mohammed Siraj, once again.

New Zealand: 1 Will Young, 2 Tim Seifert, 3 Henry Nicholls, 4 Daryl Mitchell, 5 Tom Latham (wk), 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mitchell Santner (capt.), 8 Nathan Smith, 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Jacob Duffy, 11 Blair Tickner

India: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shubman Gill (capt.), 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Axar Patel, 6 KL Rahul (wk), 7 Naman Dhir, 8 Anshul Kamboj, 9 Auqib Nabi, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Gurnoor Brar
