Sinners actor and Oscar winner Michael B Jordan stars opposite Butler as Sonny's partner Detective Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs, who was played by Philip Michael Thomas in the television series.

Per Variety, the film will explore "the glamour and corruption of mid-'80s Miami" and is "inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking".

The series' pilot episode, which aired in 1984, focused on Sonny dealing with a divorce and losing his partner Eddie Rivera while chasing a drug dealer. He eventually meets Tubbs, a New York police detective, with the pair agreeing to team up to take down a Colombian drug dealer.

Miami Vice ’85 also stars Danny Ramirez and The White Lotus actor Walton Goggins, who are both pictured on set alongside Butler.

Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, André Holland and Michael Irby also star.

Joseph Kosinski, who also worked on Top Gun Maverick as well as the recent F1 movie, is directing.

Miami Vice was previously rebooted for the big screen back in 2006 with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the lead roles. The film was critically panned and flopped at the box office earning $165 million against a reported $135 million budget.

Miami Vice ’85 is set for release on May 19, 2028.
