Prabowo calls badminton national team after winning first gold medal

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called Indonesia's national badminton team to express his appreciation after the men's team secured Indonesia's first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

"On Thursday night, September 24, upon arriving home after his activities, President Prabowo took the time to call the Indonesian national badminton team, which had just won the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan," Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a written statement received here on Friday.

The President made the call after receiving news that Indonesia's men's team had defeated China for 3-2 points in the final.

During the call, Prabowo extended his congratulations and offered words of encouragement to the athletes who were still competing in the 2026 Asian Games.

"Keep fighting!" the President told the Indonesian team.

The gold medal from the men's team of the badminton event marked Indonesia's first gold at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Indonesia trailed China 0-2 in the final before leveling the score at 2-2.

Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah then sealed the win by defeating Weng Hongyang 23-21, 21-13 in the fifth match, securing Indonesia's 3-2 victory.

Wijaya said the President's attention was a form of support for the Indonesian contingent, which is still competing at the 2026 Asian Games.

He also encouraged the Indonesian public to continue supporting and praying for the athletes striving to bring honor to the nation.

"Let's pray that Indonesian athletes achieve their best results and bring honor to the nation. Indonesia wins!" Wijaya said.

The men's team victory ended Indonesia's 28-year wait for a gold medal in the Asian Games men's team event.

Indonesia last won gold in the discipline at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
