Kano Assembly seeks urgent support for rice farmers affected by flooding

The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday called on Governor Abba Yusuf to provide emergency assistance to residents of Shuwaki town in the Tudun Wada Local Government Area of the state after a heavy downpour that destroyed over 200 farmlands and damaged critical infrastructure.

The appeal followed deliberations on the floor of the House during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore.

Presenting the motion, the member representing Tudun Wada Constituency, Sule Shuwaki, said the downpour, which occurred last Thursday, destroyed over 200 rice farms belonging to local farmers.

Shuwaki explained that the downpour, which caused flooding, had also destroyed a historic bridge along the Tudun Wada-Shuwaki Road, disrupting transportation, particularly for students and other residents.

“The downpour which happened on Thursday has destroyed over 200 rice farms following flooding in Shuwaki. The flooding has also washed a bridge along Tudunwada-Shuwaki road,” he said.

He explained that the collapsed bridge had adversely affected the socio-economic activities of the community, making it difficult for residents to access their farms and move between the affected areas.

The lawmaker appealed to the state government to immediately provide relief materials and other forms of assistance to affected farmers and other residents of the area affected by the flooding.

“We are appealing to the state government to come to the aid of the affected farmers and other residents affected by flooding to alleviate their sufferings,” the lawmaker said.

He also called for the immediate reconstruction of the damaged bridge and road to ease the hardship being experienced by residents of Shuwaki and surrounding communities.

The motion was seconded by the member representing Gezawa Constituency, Abdullahi Kara.

After deliberations, the House adopted the motion and called on the state government to expedite action on the situation.
