Economy minister: Sabah receives RM582m, highest allocation for small-scale projects nationwide since 2023

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 11 — A total of RM1.52 billion has been allocated for 8,069 small-scale projects and People’s Facility Initiatives (IKR) nationwide since 2023, with Sabah receiving the largest share at RM582.29 million for 2,301 projects.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said RM175.24 million of the allocation for Sabah was channelled for the implementation of 985 IKR projects, and RM407.05 million was for 1,316 small-scale projects.

For this year alone, he said, Sabah received RM113.3 million to implement 481 IKR and small-scale projects, out of a total national allocation of RM323.8 million.

“Every application must undergo an evaluation process to ensure the project is feasible, taking into account factors such as suitability, status and site availability, before funds are channelled to the implementing agencies,” he said.

He told reporters this after visiting an IKR project to upgrade a wooden bridge to a semi-concrete structure in Kampung Kalansanan here today.

On the need for concrete bridges in water-based settlements, particularly in Sabah, Akmal Nasrullah said the Ministry of Economy was considering making the construction of such facilities a priority under the IKR programme next year.

He said the matter warranted attention as bridges served not only as pathways for residents but were also important for safety, particularly during emergencies such as fires.

“For next year, under the IKR programme, we can make these small bridges a key focus area. When the ministry receives applications from residents or Sabah, we will prioritise these small bridge projects,” he said.

On the project he visited, Akmal Nasrullah said it was valued at RM199,508 and implemented by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) under the IKR programme, and was completed on January 13.

He said the project involved upgrading a bridge measuring 200 feet (about 70 metres) in length and 1.8 metres in width to improve safety and facilitate the movement of residents. — Bernama
