Education minister Fadhlina Sidek has announced that all educational institutions in Selangor, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will close tomorrow due to the worsening haze.

Fadhlina said that in Pahang, only schools in Rompin will be closed.

She said schools in Perlis, Perak, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan will operate as usual.

Earlier today, the education department in Negeri Sembilan announced that all schools in the state would be closed tomorrow, while schools in Johor are closed today and tomorrow.

This evening, the education ministry said schools in areas that record air pollutant index (API) readings of more than 180 are to close tomorrow, while schools in areas that record APIs of more than 150 for three consecutive days will close from Oct 12.

API readings of between zero and 50 are categorised as good, 51 to 100 as moderate, 101 to 200 as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy, and 301 and above as hazardous.

At 10pm, a total of 36 areas recorded unhealthy API readings, with Seremban in Negeri Sembilan and Segamat, Johor, topping the list at 188.
