PH Army: 1 CAFGU dead, 2 soldiers hurt in Negros Occidental clash

A member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) Active Auxiliary (CAA) was killed in a clash in Escalante City, Negros Occidental on Tuesday, the Philippine Army said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) said two soldiers were also wounded in the incident after an armed group allegedly attacked government forces.

“The two wounded soldiers were immediately brought to a hospital and are now in stable condition,” the Army said.

The attackers were allegedly remnants of a rebel group, according to the military.

The 3ID said troops of the 79th Infantry Battalion (79IB) were conducting a security patrol when the firefight occurred.

The firefight lasted around 10 minutes.

“This attack shows the stark contrast between those working with communities toward peace and development and those who continue to resort to violence. Our troops were there to help sustain the gains of the community and ensure that our people can live without fear or intimidation,” 3ID commander Major General Joey Escanillas said.

“Violence will not stop us from working with our partners to bring security, government services, and opportunities closer to the people,” he added.

Escanillas expressed condolences to the family of the fallen CAA member and assured them of the Army's support.
