Democratic leader Jeffries announces bid for US House speaker

Translate

US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries formally sought support Wednesday for his candidacy to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives following Democratic victories in the midterm elections, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

In a letter to incoming members of the 120th Congress, Jeffries celebrated the party’s electoral success, declaring that “America is back” and called for a new political direction focused on affordability, accountability and American values.

“I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives,” he said.

Jeffries pledged to prioritise lowering living costs, reversing Medicaid cuts, restoring food assistance funding, extending Affordable Care Act tax credits and eliminating Trump-era tariffs. He also called for an end to the war in Iran, which he blamed for rising gasoline prices.

On accountability, Jeffries promised stronger congressional oversight of the Trump administration, measures against corruption and price gouging, and a ban on stock trading by members of Congress.

He also emphasised protecting voting rights, equal treatment under the law and the country’s tradition as a nation of immigrants.

Arguing that Democrats had successfully challenged the Trump administration even while in the minority, Jeffries said the party must now deliver broader policy changes with control of Congress.
