9-1-1 Faces Do Or Die In Season 10

Losing Bobby Nash during 9-1-1 season 8 was one of the hardest parts of watching the show. Everything shifted tonally after that moment, and season 9 focused on what life would look like after that loss. The arcs focused on healing from the grief, handling survivor guilt, taking on new roles, and simply finding a way forward.

That worked for 9-1-1- season 9. In fact, it was necessary, as it helped the viewers move forward as well. It worked enough to help ABC renew the first responder drama for a 10th season. This is where the work needs to be done if the show is set to continue past this point. A new identity needs to be forged, as 9-1-1 figures out how to stand out on its own.

It would be easy to fall back on grief to explain character decisions. While healing isn't linear and that needs to be highlighted at times, it can't be an overused crutch to keep Bobby's memory alive. In fact, the series needs to highlight that there are so many other great characters at the 118. There are newer characters getting more time, and that means new bonds to form.

9-1-1 Season 10 Is A Do Or Die Year For The ABC Procedural

This is a do or die era for the procedural. If it can't find its footing with the first half of the season, more will tune out, preferring to watch older episodes instead. The good news is that there are plenty of characters to focus on, and ways for each of them to usher in a new era.

9-1-1 season 9 was a year of change. Following the death of Bobby Nash, the 2025-2026 cycle focused on grieving and healing. This wasn't just important to show the characters handling the loss and figuring out a path forward, but also a chance for viewers to have space and time to grieve. There is still anger surrounding the death of Bobby. Not only was it not a death that was expected, but it also isn't viewed as one that was necessary.

However, the show needs to commit to its decision, and that means pushing forward with the 118 family finding its path to healing. Season 9 allowed Athena to handle the fears of her son following in her late husband's footsteps, while Chimney focused on filling the shoes that he never expected to have as Captain of the 118 while suffering from survivor's guilt.

Eddie needed to reconcile with the fact that he wasn't around when Bobby died, and Hen not only had to handle the loss of her captain, but also her own health struggles. Then there was Buck, who had to deal with that grief while everyone around him expected him to bottle it up and move forward.

Now, it's time for 9-1-1 to prove that it can stand on its own. The 118 needs to find its path, with Chimney at the helm. If it can't do that, then the 10th season is sure to be the last. Viewers will want positive reminders, but they'll also want to see that there is new life in this series. Otherwise, they'll turn to other shows that offer the same wild saves and that found family aspect.

What 9-1-1 Can Do To Survive Beyond The Bobby Nash Years

The good thing for a show with an ensemble cast is that there are plenty of ways for 9-1-1 to survive in a post-Bobby world. One of those is through Athena's arc. There are no immediate plans for a love interest, which allows time for her heart to heal and open herself up to finding love again. Instead, the focus could be on her career, something that seemed to stagnate a little. Sure, she loved being a sergeant, but from comments on 9-1-1: Lone Star about how she would make a great detective, it's clear that something has been holding her back.

The end of 9-1-1 season 9 made it clear that she is starting her journey as a detective. Now, the series needs to focus on mistakes that she could make, learning new skills, and proving that it's not too late in life to grow in your career.

As for the 118, there is more time to highlight development. Buck is the clearest example, who used Bobby to lean on throughout the first seven seasons. While he was starting to grow up and find his path during the eighth season, it was Bobby's death that really pushed him to find everything that had been missing in his life. 9-1-1 season 10 can focus on him being a father, rather than looking up to the father figure in his life, giving him the best year of his life.

Buck also started taking on more of a mentor role for Harry throughout the ninth season, becoming the example for someone else in the way Bobby was for him. It may be small, but it's the perfect way to set the tone for how the 118 can move forward. Buck will still have his own opinions and ways of doing things, but the heart of the arc is taking Bobby's final words to him to heart.

Chimney needs to find his own way to lead. While there are skills he would have learned from Bobby over the years, he also has his own way of being a leader. He has his own wants and dreams for the firehouse, and 9-1-1 needs to allow him to stand on those dreams and build them up. Ushering in this new era helps the series find a new footing, honoring the past but also creating a new path forward to bring in new dynamics and methods to handle emergencies.

As Eddie and Hen continue their growth, more time needs to be spent on the younger blood in the firehouse. Not only do we need to see more of Harry, but Ravi needs to become a bigger focus. 9-1-1 can keep the family aspect without feeling forced, and the new relationships help form a new vibe that cements its place as a show to watch.

9-1-1 Season 10 premieres on Thursday, October 15 at 8/7c on ABC.
