The MCU Just Introduced Another Spider-Man Secret Identity Loophole

The MCU has just introduced another loophole the franchise could use to allow other characters to be aware of Spider-Man's secret identity, should it so choose to. The matter of secret identities and their reveals has been a major one for the MCU timeline ever since Tony Stark revealed he was Iron Man to the public in the original 2008 Iron Man, and Spider-Man has continued to carry that torch, with the reveal of his secret identity to the public in Spider-Man: Far From Home's ending being one of the most dramatic moments in the franchise.

Though Spider-Man: No Way Home saw everyone's memories wiped of the knowledge that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Brand New Day already presented one prospective loophole of sorts, by suggesting the Hulk remembers Peter Parker and Spider-Man are one and the same, as the end of the pair's fight suggests the berserker still has a soft spot for the web-slinging hero, given the raging Hulk effectively forfeits the fight between them after seeming to recognize Peter's name.

While it initially seemed the Hulk might be the only case of such a scenario in the MCU, the franchise has teased the prospect of another similar matter being the case thanks to the unique circumstances around another figure in Marvel's extensive and eclectic film world - which would make a lot of sense, given the nature of their existence may mean Doctor Strange's spell didn't work on them.

VisionQuest's Spider-Man Reference Raises The Prospect Of Another Loophole With Peter Parker's Secret Identity

Entertainment Tonight's coverage and behind-the-scenes clips of VisionQuest notably came with a reference to an MCU hero most people likely didn't expect to come up in the Vision-focused series. When talking with the humanized version of EDITH, the characters mentions that "my first boss was a junior in high school", appearing to refer to Peter's time in Spider-Man: Far From Home as the wielder of the high-tech glasses after they were bequeathed to him posthumously by Iron Man.

This is interesting in that EDITH appears to remember details about Spider-Man that suggest she remembers his civilian persona, meaning EDITH may well be aware that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are one and the same, especially given the time Peter spent with the AI in Far From Home.

This would align with the MCU's setup thus far, as Doctor Strange's spell for everyone to forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man may not be one that includes technology quite in the same sense, much in the same way it's implied the Hulk may remember Peter Parker is Spider-Man because his existence is similarly a loophole around the spell's magic.

EDITH Knowing Peter Parker Is Spider-Man Would Be One Way To Not Totally Rewrite The Hero's Connection To Iron Man

The implication that EDITH may remember Peter Parker is Spider-Man is one that would align well with the MCU and its long-term trajectory when it comes to the beloved Marvel hero.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending closing with Peter sacrificing his life with loved ones in order to protect the world was a true way to show his heroism and let him start anew, completely erasing all of his history would be something of a waste, which is partly why Spider-Man: Brand New Day makes sure to lean back into the idea of MJ and Ned rediscovering Spider-Man's secret identity.

In a similar sense, having EDITH retain knowledge of Peter Parker being Spider-Man could work to ensure Peter's extensive time under the wing of Iron Man in the MCU isn't forgotten or swept over entirely for good, since one of Iron Man's creations still recalls this - especially since this could allow EDITH or Vision to come to Peter's rescue with an awareness of his secret some time later down the line, which is a fascinating prospect for the franchise on several levels.
