Live-Action Naruto Movie Officially Gets Major 2027 Release Update

A cinematic obsessive with the filmic palate of a starving raccoon, Rob London will watch pretty much anything once. With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Areas of interest include science fiction, film noir, horror flicks, '70s disaster pictures, Bond movies, '90s action, giant robots, dinosaurs, super heroes, and the exuberantly schlocky output of Cannon Films. He also enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars when they're good, and maybe even more when they're bad. As a Canadian, he also has a vested interest in Canadian movies and TV shows, especially the cheesier ones dubbed "Canuxploitation."

An expert on Marvel Comics, he has also written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and is a member of the Marvel Research Team. He can frequently be found pontificating on comic-book continuity or bemoaning the misfortunes of the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account.

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Believe it! The live-action Naruto movie has its head down for a ninja run as it sprints towards coming to fruition. The adaptation of the immensely popular manga and anime series has been in the works at Lionsgate for some time, and now it has a major distributor as a production partner, and a production start date that might be sooner than you think.

So far, we don't know much about the project. Destin Daniel Cretton, no stranger to martial arts after helming the 2021 MCU film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will both write and direct the film. May December star Charles Melton is the only cast member so far; he'll play Kakashi Hatake in the film.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Sony will partner with Lionsgate on the film, following a competitive bidding process that involved multiple studios. That will reunite the studio with Cretton, who helmed their $2.5 billion USD blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day last summer. Cretton has an overall deal with the studio, as well. There's a great potential for synergy here, as Sony owns Crunchyroll, the largest anime distributor in North America.

Naruto is expected to begin filming in the spring of 2027. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
