‘Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story’ Trailer: ‘Superman’ Star David Corenswet Plays NFL Player Diagnosed With Cancer in Real-Life Story

Paramount released the trailer for “Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story,” a sports biopic about the final pick in the 1983 NFL draft.

The sports drama tells “the heartfelt story of the inspiring, enduring impact John Tuggle had on his team and teammates after being drafted by the New York Giants,” the logline says.

“Superman” star David Corenswet stars as John Tuggle, who was drafted by the New York Giants in 1983 as the last selection in the NFL draft, a position nicknamed “Mr. Irrelevant.” Tuggle made the roster and played the following season on special teams before being promoted to starting fullback after Rob Carpenter was injured. His teammates voted him special teams player of the year.

During the offseason, Tuggle underwent minor surgery for a knee injury and was involved in a car crash. Following the crash, he went to see a doctor for shoulder pain and was diagnosed with cancer. The Giants did not keep him on the team after the 1985 season, but paid for his health insurance until his death in 1986 at age 25. The team wore his number 38 on their helmets for the 1986-87 season, which ended in a Super Bowl win.

The film also stars Isabel May as Katie, Michael Shannon as Giants head coach Bill Parcells and David Krumholtz as Julius “Whitey” Horai.

“Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story” was written by Nick Santora and directed by Jonathan Levine. Santora and Levine also produced the film, along with Gillian Bohrer. The film is slated for theatrical release on Dec. 25. Watch the full trailer below.
