Ministry, BPOM partner to ensure fish quality for free meal program

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has partnered with the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) to strengthen quality and safety oversight of fishery products for the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program.
Acting Head of the Maritime and Fisheries Products Quality Control and Supervision Agency Ishartini said an agreement signed Monday, October 5, provides a legal basis for regional technical units to supervise fresh fish products more systematically.
“The agreement provides a legal basis for the ministry's Quality Agency units across Indonesia to work with BPOM in the regions to support government programs,” she said in an official release here Thursday.
The cooperation covers joint supervision of the production and distribution of fishery-based food, laboratory testing, and assistance for businesses to meet food safety and quality standards.
The two institutions will also exchange data and information, conduct joint public outreach and education, and support efforts to expand market access for fishery-based food products.
Through the partnership, 46 technical units of the ministry's Quality Agency and 83 BPOM units across Indonesia will conduct joint inspections of fish processing units and supply chains.
The cooperation also covers faster issuance of processing eligibility certificates to support MBG, along with education on sanitation, hygiene and proper fish-handling procedures for Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG), or MBG kitchens.
Beyond securing the MBG supply chain from upstream to downstream, the partnership aims to improve competitiveness and assist fisheries micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in entering export markets.
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has expressed readiness to absorb fishery products to meet demand for fish protein in the MBG program.
BGN Head Sudaryono said fish is among the protein sources being promoted for MBG menus, making the agency ready to act as an offtaker and buyer of fishery products.
Following BGN's commitment, the ministry will align fish production planning with estimated MBG demand while facilitating the absorption of aquaculture products.
