Sifuna Faces Major Political Test as Linda Mwananchi Takes Rally to Nairobi

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna faces one of his biggest political tests yet on Sunday as the Linda Mwananchi Movement takes its mobilisation campaign to the capital, with a major rally planned at Jacaranda Grounds.

The high-profile Nairobi tour will begin at All Saints Cathedral at 9am with a church service before Sifuna and his supporters embark on a tour of some of the city’s busiest markets and neighbourhoods.

From the cathedral, the movement is expected to head to Marikiti and Gikomba markets before proceeding to Burma Market. The procession will then move through Stage 17, B Centre and Manyanja before joining Jogoo Road on its way to Jacaranda Grounds.

The tour is expected to culminate in a mega rally at Jacaranda Grounds at around 2pm, where Sifuna will address supporters.

Sifuna calls for massive turnout

Sifuna has urged his supporters to turn out in large numbers for the Nairobi mobilisation, which his allies have already dubbed the “mother of all rallies”.

In a social media message, the senator described the programme as a combination of prayer and political mobilisation while challenging his supporters to attend.

“Programme ya Sunday ni fupi sana… kwanza maombi ndio Mungu aongezee mahasidi na wale wa roho mbaya confusion… alafu tuingie kiwanja pale Jacaranda. Excuse yako ni gani?” Sifuna said.

The senator’s mobilisation comes as he seeks to expand Linda Mwananchi’s reach and demonstrate that the movement can command a significant following in Nairobi.

The Nairobi rally comes at a crucial moment for Sifuna, who has increasingly positioned himself as a major figure in the opposition’s political realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His public declaration of presidential ambitions and growing activities under the Linda Mwananchi banner have raised his profile, particularly among younger voters, while placing him in an increasingly crowded opposition field.

Sunday’s mobilisation will therefore provide an important test of Sifuna’s ability to translate his growing national profile into grassroots support in the capital.

Rival camps trade accusations

The planned rally has also sparked political tension, with rival camps trading accusations over alleged attempts to disrupt the event.

ODM Nairobi chairman George Aladwa moved to reassure Sifuna’s camp that his party would not interfere with the Linda Mwananchi activities.

Aladwa dismissed allegations that he and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja were planning to disrupt the rally, insisting that Linda Mwananchi was free to conduct its political activities in the city.

“I wish to make our position as ODM Nairobi very clear. Linda Mwananchi is free to hold its rally and conduct its political activities in Nairobi,” Aladwa said.

He also denied claims that ODM had planned a parallel event in Nairobi on Sunday, which could have triggered confrontation between supporters of competing political formations.

Aladwa’s statement followed allegations by United Opposition principal and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka that the ODM official and Sakaja were planning to interfere with the Linda Mwananchi rally.
