KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat today conveyed its condolences to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his family following the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali.

Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Md Nor expressed Parliament's condolences before proceedings began.

"On behalf of Parliament, I extend our condolences to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his family over the passing of his beloved wife, the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali," he said.

Ramli made the remarks at the start of the fifth term of the 15th Parliament.

The Dewan Rakyat will sit for 37 days until Dec 8.

Dr Siti Hasmah, 100, died at the National Heart Institute on Sept 28.

Born on July 12, 1926, in Klang, Selangor, Dr Siti Hasmah was among the country's earliest Malay women doctors and went on to have a long career in medicine, public health and social work.

She studied medicine at King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore and graduated in 1955.
